First Pskov Winter Entertainments
Pskov is very old and interesting Russian city, it's a tourist center. Nowadays a new tradition of summer and winter city carnivals arises. Pskov townsmen already get ready for the upcoming great holiday - Pskov will celebrate 1100 years anniversary in 2003!
"Old new year" (the night from 13 to 14 January) the city population celebrated noisily. On 13th of January, 2001, the first city carnival took place, it's name was "Pskov Winter Entertainments". Almost all citizens appeared on the street of the city. Automobile traffic was blocked downtown for the whole day.
From the local press: "Great carnival disturbance changed the city center into the patrimony of pedestrians, people were heading to the central New Year Tree where a new carnival bath-house was unveiled"
From all parts of the city people were going downtown with hooting and shouting, they weared suits of wood-goblins, witches, Daddy Frosts (Russian Santa Clauses), Dragons and Snowflakes, various thinkgable and unthinkable personages.
At noon people organized general new year washing to well-known city officials!
Songs, dances, jokes, dramatizations and other ideas of celebration participants cheered the audience. Everywhere was an increased number of people, there was spontaneous-nonorganized rolling from ice slopes in children park, on the central stadium Great Carnival Games were organized: "wall on the wall" competition of boys and girl, skiing on one ski, weight lifting etc. Next to the stadium there was a grand carnival motor rally of decorated cars. In the evening in numerous cafes and bars of Pskov the fun went on - somewhere there were haircut demonstrations, owners of some of which weren't able to get into the doorway; somewhere there were mass fortune telling, that prhopesied a new car to someone, a new work to another, a new spouse to another, pregnancy to another. Somewhere tatoo was demonstrated - body-art. Everywhere there were dances, fun, laughing. And there was a great firework in the night!
  We took place in a serious competition called "Beauty is a great power!", where four-legged dandies demonstrated their suits.
From the name of our Great Dane community two eightmonth "doctors" participated in the carnival - Noyfield and Nagasaki. They carried our their role with dignity amongst general noisy merry madness.
Our "doctors" were very bright personages on the carnival. All Pskov newspapers that were writing about the celebration didn't forget to mention them, they were on TV too.
"Sterkh" newspaper: "One could envy the phantasy of their owners. On the snowy stage there was a pirate and a clown, a New Year Tree and a bear cub, a Gipsy and the Year's symbol - snake, Starry Night and Great Danes-doctors under the name "Ambulance".
Our result was public ovations, merry memory and a diploma of city officials.
